Four Ways to Save Money on Air Conditioning

HIGHLIGHTS:  Air conditioners use three to five percent less electricity for every degree you raise the thermostat.  So setting it at 75 instead of 72 can save a decent amount of money over the course of a summer.  A few more ways to save on A/C are by investing in fans, and making sure your shades are drawn to keep the sun out.

1.  Set your thermostat a little higher.  Air conditioners use three to five percent less energy for every degree you raise the thermostat.  So setting it at 75 instead of 72 can actually save you a decent amount of money over the course of a summer.

2.  Invest in a ceiling fan, or just more fans in general.  They don’t cool the air, but you FEEL cooler because it brushes past your skin.  And feeling cooler is the real goal.

3.  Draw your shades, and maybe plant some tall bushes outside.  Large bushes on the south and west sides of your home offer the best sun protection.  And definitely keep your shades and curtains drawn, so sunlight doesn’t pour in and heat your place up.

4.  Use the air pressure in your home to create a crosswind.  You might need to experiment to find the right combo.  But opening two windows a TINY bit on opposite sides of your home can create a crosswind and keep the air moving.

It even works if you crack a window on the second floor, and another one on the first floor.  Just don’t do it while the A/C is on, or it’ll blow the cool air out and waste money.
